The Wedding of Kerry and Noah {Altnaveigh Inn – Storrs, CT} Sassy Mouth Photography

I loved everything about this sweet little wedding.  The brides parents house where getting ready, first look, and family photo’s went down was just lovely.  The couple is beautiful.  And it was just a small, intimate, lovely little wedding with their closest people in attendance.  Sometimes, that is just the right thing.  Altnaveigh Inn in Storrs was the ceremony, and dinner location.  What a beautiful Inn, great food, wonderful staff.  Kerry and Noah couldn’t have been a sweeter couple, and thank you all for having me and my team there to document it.  :)

Niagara Falls {Sassy Road Trip August 2011} Sassy Mouth Photography

After Hershey Park, we didn’t know where to go.  Naturally…Niagara Falls seemed right?!  :)   Haha.  Tj has seen the falls as a kid with his family, but I have never, and always wanted to.  So off we went, through the mountains of Pennsylvania (amazing shots, up in the mountains and cloud, I was having a MAJOR photographer geek out!!!) through upstate New York, and onwards towards Niagara Falls.  Next year I want to drive across the country in my van, so it was nice to check off some of the out of the way points on my list of things to see.  And Niagara Falls is out of the way.  Waaaaaaay out of the way.  It was supposed to be cloudy that day, and was a little rainy when we woke up, but my good karma pulled through for me, and it couldn’t have been a more PERFECT day to go there!!  Nice and warm, amazing cloud, tons of sunshine.  Made for some super magical images.  And when I checked into the Rainbow reservation deck, it said I was in Ontario Canada.  Good times.  :)    So, for all of you who have gone, who have wanted to go, those who may never get to go, I documented Niagara Falls with much love to share with me peeps.  This is all for you guys!!

Hershey Chocolate World & High Point Mansion {August Road Trip 2012} Sassy Mouth Photography

Next on our road trip, we visited Hershey Chocolate World.  They have a free ride that shows how chocolate is made, from the shipping, melting, and creating of our favorite Hershey treats…and at the end you get a sample, and shot out into the vast store where any of your chocolate fantasies can be purchased for your enjoyment.  The ride was adorable, and just enough, although you can make your own chocolate bar, go on a trolley tour of the town, and watch a 3D movie of your choosing in Chocolate World as well.  We stuck with the free ride, and bought an array of tastey treats to bring home to our peeps.  Then we went off to explore the town of Hershey ourselves.  First up, finding the factory.  And when I stepped out of the car to document the real steeples of the real factory, and realized that the air of the town really DOES smell like chocolate, it was one of the best moments ever.  It really does smell like delicious melted chocolate.  Mmm.  Then I wanted to see Hershey’s Mansion.  We found a driveway, and took a chance, and came upon High Point Mansion, home of Mr. and Mrs. Hershey.  Closed to the public for touring, there was another family of trespassers on the property, so we took a chance and scoped it out.  A beautiful home, on top of the hill, with a view of his factory.  I knew there must be a road that led right to it, and a little exploring later, we were absolutely somewhere we shouldn’t be, but right under neath the towering HERSHEY smoke stacks, and next to a private train rail that ran right through the factory.  It was pretty awesome.  And still smelled like straight up chocolate.  Mmmm.

Antique Automobile Club of America Museum {August Road Trip 2012} Sassy Mouth Photography

Our rental car with unlimited miles turned out to be a fabulous Charger.  The Charger inspired a road trip.  Our first stop, Hershey, PA and the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum.  When we pulled up, the woman asked if we were there to enter our car into the car show.  :)   There happened to be a car show that day!  Very cool, we watched some guy get dunked in the tank, then went into the museum.  It was absolutely fascinating to see all the old cars.  Really an amazing place.  They have it staged so well too, and the cars are in order of dates in history, so you can see the progression.  The downstairs there are buses, a model train set, and a diner.  Very cool museum.  Next up, Hershey Chocolate World, of course! :)   Enjoy these first, some of them are sooo cool.

Abby, Tulle, and Feathers {This kid is so dang cute} Sassy Mouth Photography

Me “Abby, you wanna take VALENTINES pictures??”

Abby “YEAH!!”

Me “And Im gonna wrap you up in Tulle to cover your diaper, and you are going to through feathers in the air!!”

Abby “You’re gonna cover my diaper?”

And that’s pretty much what we talked about the whole time.  That I covered her diaper (pull up actually…).  But hey, whatever works!!

This kid is so cute, I can’t even stand it.  And these feathers made the biggest mess ever, but it was totally worth it.  Oh, she totally left me on my own to clean up…the models job was done.  :)

2012 Holiday Tree {Valentines Day} Sassy Mouth Photography

I love my Christmas Tree.  I have always loved Christmas Tree’s.  My mom too…hers is one of the most beautiful I know.  And one year she didn’t want to take it down, it made her happy.  So on Valentines Day, she put Valentines Cards on it, and red ribbons, and the painted heard Valentines my Nana painted for my brother, sister, and I one year.  And it really blew my mind, I had never thought a Christmas Tree could be anything but that.  And there is was looking beautiful for the wrong holiday.  Then for St. Patricks Day, she put shamrocks on it.  My cousin Daniel wrote her this hysterical letter from a made up organization that stated if she kept the tree up past St. Patricks Day, it was now considered a ‘holiday tree’ and must, by law, be kept up all year.  I so wish I had that letter.  She did take it down eventually though, I am not sure precisely when it was, but the tree didn’t make it the whole year…it did make it into infamy and we have talked about it many times.

I have not turned my tree off since it went up the week before Christmas.  My tree in my house went up pretty late as far as normal decoration time is around these parts, I think due to the fact that The Sassy Space was soooo superly decorated.  I mean, it was the North Pole down there.  Even smelled like it.  :)   So I haven’t had it up for THAT long…ok…maybe it has been a while.  But it is so pretty!! And the glowing white lights in the living room at night is so comforting somehow.  And it is soooo pretty!  So, last Sunday, when faced with the inevitability of taking the tree down, I posted on my facebook page that I don’t think it’s right.  The general verdict was that making it a holiday tree was a pretty good idea, and Josh Broekstra even mentioned that Christmas, in fact, is only 10 months away.  That’s my kind of thinking.  So, I went to my Pinterest and looked at the things I had tacked for Valentines projects.  A few felt hearts strung on string later, one of my mom’s beautiful love flowers made out of Valentines tissue paper, and a sheet of my most favorite stamp scrapbook paper…and that tree was looking pretty fly.  And the wheels have already begun turning for the next holiday.  :)   Do you think I can put a leprechaun up there?

Holiday Etsy Treasures {Year One of Thoughtful, Handcrafted Gifts} Sassy Mouth Photography

In October, I decided that this holiday season I would do the majority of my shopping through small shops, small business’, and just smart, artsy, crafty people.  Now, when I first hit up Etsy, I was overwhelmed.  Overwhelmed by all the beautiful things, all the creativity, and coolness, but most of all overwhelmed by the volume of items for sale on the site.  Then along came Heartsy.  Yep, I am not kidding, it is like Groupon, but for Etsy.  And it is amazing.  Now, while I want to support small business’ this girl likes a deal.  And I can tell you, some of the things that I bought, I am so impressed with the packaging, the sales, the customer service, they have gained a customer for life.  So here are a few of my Etsy treasures, shops and item description listed below the photo’s.  :)

All so wonderful!  I hope everyone that had these end up in their possession is enjoying them!!! I totally kept that Pear from Sarah Ogren though, sooooo adorable!! :)

Falafel Burgers with Feta Tzatziki Sauce {Mmmmmmmm} Sassy Mouth Photography

I cooked FALAFEL!!  True story!!!!  I am so proud, for real.  My first encounter with Falafel was this summer at the Stonington Winefest, The Pita Spot in Mystic was there, and I asked my new bff’s which one their favorite was.  They gave me this pita of magic.  And then I made TJ go there after an engagement shoot in Mystic this fall because I was jonesing.  My bff jumped right up and gave me a hug.  :)   BUT Mystic is a little out of the way for a falafel pita whenever I want it (although totally worth it, they have these pickled cucumbers, off the hook!!), so I went on the hunt to find a recipe that seemed like I could make it.  This Falafel Burgers with Feta Tzatziki Sauce from Cinnamon Girl Recipes is the bomb diggity.  I even used the food processor!!!!  I went with Pita’s instead of a bun, to go with the whole idea I was trying to replicate…only ONE small incident, I only got ONE can of chickpea’s (like the most important part of falafel…..) and I only had blackbeans!  I rationed to myself and TJ that beans where beans, and I think they made the patty a little wetter than it should have been, and a longer cook time.  And I had to ad more of everything because the black beans OWNED the flavor, dominated.  Oh and LOTS of lemon is better, it makes it soooooo good.  Mmmmmm.  I can’t wait to make it right!!! But even wrong, it was delicious, TJ actually requested them the next day for leftover night!!! And, it was the first meal with no meat in it I think I have ever fed him…and he was HAPPY!!  What??!!  Ok, recipe below the pictures!!

Braised Pork Shoulder & Tangy Barbeque Sauce {Mmmmmmmm} Sassy Mouth Photography

I have decided to really try to document my cooking, because I am not naturally adept at coming up with recipers (Rachael Ray and my mom have taught me all I know!} and with the wonder that is pinterest, all these amazing recipes are at my finger tips..in beautiful colorful photographs.  So, I make my weekly grocery list from my pins, and cook my little heart out.  TJ has never been happier.

First up, a slow cooked Pork Shoulder (the original recipe I found on SimpleBites calls for a dutch oven slow cook, but I don’t have one of those, so in the crockpot for about 3 hours on high did the trick nicely, although cooking time will vary) in apple cider, and home made barbeque sauce!  Something was a little off with my sauce though, I think I didn’t put enough brown sugar, and it needed a little more kick, but I mean, it is homemade barbeque sauce, how awesome is that?  I would do it again and again.

Here is the link to the Simplebites site where I came across the recipe – Click here – and I do believe it was quite successful!   I put blue cheese sprinkles on my sandwich at the end, because I had them, and it needed them, and it was delicious.  :)   Recipe below the pictures.  :)

Recipe: Braised Pork Shoulder

—From Poor Girl Gourmet: Eat in Style on a Bare-Bones Budget
by Amy McCoy/Andrews McMeel Publishing

  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 (4- to 5-pound) pork shoulder (see Note)
  • 2 medium yellow onions, cut crosswise into ¼-inch rounds
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme, or 1 tablespoon fresh
  • 4 cups apple cider
  1. Warm the olive oil over medium-high heat in a large Dutch oven or other large, heavy pot with a tight-fitting lid. Season the pork shoulder on all sides with salt and pepper. Brown the pork shoulder on all long sides (don’t worry about the short ends, you’ll be wrestling pork shoulder and oil, and it’s not necessary), 3 to 5 minutes per side.
  2. Remove the pork shoulder from the pot and transfer it to a plate. Reduce the heat to medium. Place the onions in the pot and cook until they are softened and translucent, 5 to 7 minutes. Add the mustard and thyme, stirring to combine. Return the pork shoulder and any accumulated juices to the pan, and add the apple cider.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, cover, and cook at a gentle simmer until the meat does what? Falls off the bone. That’s right, people. At that point, the meat is also fork-tender, meaning it does not require a knife to be cut. To achieve this will take 3 to 3½ hours. Pull yourself some pork from the pot, put it on a plate, top with a bit of the cooking liquid or Tangy Barbecue Sauce (recipe below), and start thinking about pulled pork sandwiches, even as you enjoy the braised pork.

Recipe: Tangy Barbecue Sauce

—From Poor Girl Gourmet: Eat in Style on a Bare-Bones Budget
by Amy McCoy

  • 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium shallot, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled, very finely chopped
  • ½ cup distilled white vinegar
  • 3 Tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
  • 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
  • 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Sauté the shallot and garlic until softened and the shallot is translucent, 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Add the vinegar, sugar, and honey, and stir until the sugar and honey are dissolved. Add the tomato paste, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to combine. Add the chili powder, salt, and pepper, and give it a good stir.
  3. Simmer on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened, 18 to 20 minutes. Okay, now, dole it out—first onto reheated pork shoulder leftovers, and then, later this week, onto any other protein that you want to jazz up with delicious barbecue taste.
